Coaching

In order to promote wellbeing and support staff in achieving their aspirations, all members of staff (teaching and non-teaching) have the opportunity to participate in a coaching programme. Staff can choose a coach (within the Arete partnership) who will then work with the coachee in providing practical activities and guidance to assist in achieving their personal aspirations. Coaching is a unique tool that is used to support staff professionally and nurture their wellbeing. It is voluntary, has no time constraints and it is not a performance management requirement.

Head of Drama, Gordons School

Being a Drama teacher I have a passionate interest in the human condition. I am fascinated about how every single person deciphers and overcomes a problem or situation uniquely. I am dyslexic so have always been fascinated with how some people can achieve tasks, organise their lives or comprehended information in different ways. Through my dyslexia I have had to find different coping mechanisms in how to cope with the world and problem solve in order to ‘keep up’ with the status quo. I think that this has been an amazing basis for my interest in coaching others and sympathising with other’s struggles. After attending the CPD coaching courses it has only made me want to reach out and help others more but with positive and proactive tools and strategies.

Dave Cherry

SEMH Co-ordinator, Gordons School

My background is as the senior leader of boarding in a special school s for boys with ADHD, ODD and other SEMH issues.  As well as the above full time job, I had a part time job as a behaviour specialist in a mainstream school working with young people with SEMH difficulties as well as children with ASD. Also during this time I gained a degree in Social Sciences and Sociology.

I moved on to work at a Barnardo’s school, which was once again working with secondary children with SEMH difficulties and ASD.

I then came to Gordons as the Pastoral Mentor.

I am also a mental health first aider. I wish to use this training to support staff with their well being and to help them to reach their potential.

Laura Pollard

Teacher of Science, Lead Practitioner, Woking High School

I love being a teacher. My key motivation comes from a love of Science and a desire to inspire teachers and learners to love my subject as much as I do. I honestly believe that ‘Better Never Stops’; not only do I desire to be an excellent practitioner myself, but I aim to serve as a role model to others. I have been a Science teacher for over 18 years and have chosen to remain a classroom-based teacher throughout my career. As a result, I feel that I am perfectly placed to coach other teachers – to help them achieve their personal goals in teaching and beyond. Coaching is an amazing tool in helping empower teachers to identify areas for development and consider strategies to improve. I feel that my long history of classroom teaching brings a wealth of experience and expertise which I love sharing with others. I am empathetic, pragmatic and, most importantly, enthusiastic about teaching, learning and improving.

Andrea Mercer

PA to Headteacher and Leadership Team, Woking High School

As PA to the Headteacher, I am privileged to have a general overview of all aspects of our school.  Having worked in a global Telecomms company for many years before moving into the Education Sector, I have a wealth of experience in training and coaching.  These skills were put into practice when I joined Woking High, in a student centred role, during 2017.  My current role allows me to share my skill set – organisation, problem solving, time management and creative thinking, with staff, students and parents alike.  I enjoy working with people to develop new approaches and finding creative ways to solve daily challenges that arise, it is a wonderful feeling when a group of enthusiastic, energetic people come together and problems are turned into opportunities.  I would be more than happy to work with you, helping with your development areas or as a sounding board to offer another perspective on your work.

Michelle Abbs-Rowe

Assistant Head, Woking High School

I am currently an Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for timetabling, operational curriculum and Extra Curricular Activities and visits.  Prior to this, I was Director of Learning for a large and diverse department.  I have been teaching for over 25 years and pride myself on being an outstanding practitioner.  Throughout my career I have continually sought to improve my skills, including pedagogy.

My prior experience as a Head of Department meant I was involved in coaching and mentoring NQTs, SCITTs, PGCE and OTT teachers.  My current role draws on my skills of prioritising tasks, structural organisation, management of time and resources, curriculum design and staff deployment.  I feel that these are my strengths and I would be delighted to work with those of you who want to develop your skills in these areas further.
